St. Joseph's Food Pantry receives award for service to area families
St. Joseph's Food Pantry received the Family Program of the Year Award from the State Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Since January, the food pantry has served more than 5,000 families. Through generous donations from parishioners at St. Joseph Catholic Church and the community of Libertyville, St. Joseph's Food Pantry continues to provide assistance to families and combat the problem of food insecurity.
"This is such a proud moment for the food pantry," Nuala Kavanagh said.
Kavanagh volunteers at the food pantry regularly. St. Joseph's Food Pantry is a "Market Style" pantry. By allowing clients to find what they need independently, the food pantry hopes to provide clients with respect while they are there.
"We have fresh produce donated by local businesses, and on Mondays we set the produce up outside when the weather allows," Kavanagh said.
Panera Bread, Bimbo, and other local businesses have helped to donate items and help volunteer services for food drives, according to Kavanagh. The food pantry is staffed by members of The Knights of Columbus and families from St. Joseph Catholic Church.
"Throughout this very trying year, our team helped thousands of families and were able to provide nutritious food with the help of all of you, our volunteers, clergy, staff, parishioners, our local business and residential community," Kavanagh said.
