Wheeling residents offer input on playground redevelopment

In keeping with the Wheeling Park District "People-Driven" playground process, a listening session was conducted Wednesday, June 2, at the Avalon Sienna playground.

Area residents were invited to attend and offer their opinions about various design concepts and playground options presented at the meeting. The residents in attendance were able to view the renderings of multiple configurations and play pieces and choose what they would like to see at their neighborhood playground.

Staff will use their feedback to draw up a playground design proposal and bring it back to the residents. Once the design is approved, the play pieces will be ordered and staff will have a better idea of when the project will be completed.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to redevelop the Avalon Sienna playground," said Wheeling Park District Executive Director Jan Buchs.

"We have heard from many residents in the area and we know they, too, are looking forward to having the park district improve and maintain the play equipment."

Under an intergovernmental agreement with the village of Wheeling, Wheeling Park District will lease the Avalon Sienna playground.

Wheeling Park District is now responsible for all maintenance and repair of the playground equipment, surfacing and structures in the playground, as well as landscaping in and around the playground.

Avalon Sienna playground is at 5 W. Willow Road, in Wheeling. For information, visit www.wheelingparkdistrict.com.
