Major Gary Avenue project proposed in Wheaton
Wheaton is in the early stages of planning major roadwork on a segment of Gary Avenue that runs past Cosley Zoo, the Lincoln Marsh and a health and fitness club.
The proposed project would encompass Gary between Jewell Road and Harrison Avenue. It calls for adding a traffic light on Gary at Prairie Avenue, a partial widening of the road, and building a multiuse path for pedestrians and bicycles along the northeast side of the road.
Engineers will hold a public meeting on the plans between 4 and 7 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at city hall, 303 W. Wesley St.
If awarded grant funding, the work would take place in 2023 or later.
The public meeting is the first step in the project to get residents up to speed on the proposal.
