Northbrook Junior High students recognized for citizenship, volunteerism, scholarships

Northbrook Junior High students were recognized for their citizenship and volunteer service at the May 30 graduation of the class of 2021.

The American Legion Citizenship Award and the Rotary Club Volunteer Service Award each year recognize outstanding students. Teachers nominate and vote for students who best represent the character qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service for the American Legion Citizenship Awards.

Delaney Meek and Tristan Miller received Distinguished Achievement in the American Legion Citizenship Award. Sam Vishnevskiy and Danielle Yakhnis received Honorable Mention. Nominees included: Daniel Bilous, Alex Chalem, Carly Erlich, Sam Gaffney, Jonah Kasdan, Carly Pufpaf, Joshua Raub, Abby Saffar, Caitlin Schuster and Lindy Winkler.

Superintendent Larry Hewitt presents the annual Northbrook Rotary Club Volunteer Service award for extraordinary work in the spirit of volunteerism and the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self." The class of 2021 winners are Hayato Majoros and Brookte Smith.

In addition, the graduating high school seniors who received Homer O. Harvey Scholarships as alumni of the Northbrook Junior High were also recognized. Board President Tracy Katz Muhl recognized the winners, which were: Annamarie Arner, Derrick Chen, Abaigeal Crockford, Judith Feng, Abigail Knebelkamp, Shea McCarthy, Connor McHugh, Erin Nibeck, Lauren Segal, Sophia Sparacio and Angela Zhao.

The HOH scholarship was established in the name of longtime superintendent Home O. Harvey and has awarded $342,500 to 378 Northbrook Junior High graduates.
