Man gets 6 years in prison for 2018 Elgin home invasion
A man who prosecutors say entered the Elgin home of a former girlfriend where he struck her and her current boyfriend, threatened them and smashed a TV was sentenced to six years in prison days before his jury trial was to begin Monday in Rolling Meadows.
Allen Lopez, 46, pleaded guilty last week to the August 2018 home invasion in exchange for the sentence, according to prosecutors.
During his bond hearing, Cook County prosecutors said Lopez began "an unprovoked physical confrontation" with the man outside the home. As the man attempted to run inside, Lopez struck him with a large, plastic child's toy, authorities said.
According to prosecutors, Lopez - who they said was convicted of murder in 1992 - followed the man into the house, striking him and the former girlfriend when she tried to intervene. After using a chair to smash the TV and putting a hole in the door, Lopez left, but not before smashing two windows of the man's car, prosecutors said.
