Glenview in 60 seconds
Congratulations!
The Rev. Patrick Kizza, associate pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, celebrated the anniversary of his ordination as a priest this week. He was ordained May 18, 2019.
But Fr. Kizza isn't the only one celebrating a milestone: The Rev. Jerry Boland, pastor at OLPH, celebrated his 40th anniversary on May 13.
That's a gala
The Music Institute of Chicago raised more than $825,000 during its 90th Anniversary Virtual Gala on May 10. Some 250 donors contributed before and during the free event, which itself drew about 450 viewers.
Contributions during the event itself totaled $51,000, which "unlocked" challenge grants from Sidley Austin LLP and the Edwardson Family Foundation. Also, viewers met and exceeded a late contribution challenge from Music Institute parents Dan and Yoo Mi Hahn.
The MIC gala honored Maestro Zubin Mehta with the Dushkin Award, presented by his brother, Zarin Mehta, a 1998 recipient; Linda Theis Gantz and Bill Gantz, who received the Cultural Visionary Award for Chicago from honorary gala chairs Alexandra and John Nichols; and Music Institute faculty members Nina and Daniel Wallenberg, who received the Richard D. Colburn Award for Teaching Excellence.
Prerecorded performances came from MIC alumni including violinist Rachel Barton Pine, with 90th anniversary messages by past Dushkin honorees Wynton Marsalis and Renée Fleming.
The Dushkin Award is named for the MIC's founders Dorothy and David Dushkin. The award recognizes international musical luminaries for their contributions to music and musical education.
Based in Evanston, the Music Institute of Chicago provides personalized music instruction to more than 1,500 students annually, regardless of age, experience or financial means, across locations in Chicago, Downers Grove, Evanston, Lake Forest, Lincolnshire and Winnetka. It hosts 15,000 people each year at Evanston's Nichols Concert Hall for performances, classes and special events.
Mass groundbreakings
On Monday, May 17, Glenview School District 34 executed four different groundbreaking ceremonies at four school campuses from 4:30-6 p.m. In order, they happened at Lyon, Westbrook and Henking elementary schools and Springman Middle School.
Dubbed "Building Future," the golden shovels continued the process that included a March 17, 2020, referendum for $119 million to update and repair District 34 buildings. That referendum passed 65% to 35%.
Give him a vote
Jack Goldberg lives just over the border in Trevor, Wisconsin, but he was born at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, and later on in life worked in Glenview. He's won a contest and could be in line for something bigger.
In its search for the "biggest hockey fan in North America," the Upper Deck company runs a contest called "My MVP." Goldberg beat out five candidates to be named the Blackhawks' "Team MVP" after winning a Twitter contest.
He's now vying for "ultimate MVP" against his peers from across North America in another Twitter vote. People can vote by visiting UpperDeck.com/MyMVP and clicking on a candidate's profile and "liking" their Twitter post.
If successful, Goldberg could win a $3,000 Upper Deck prize pack that includes his own trading card in a 2021-22 set. Voting concludes May 24.
Last chance
The next Glenview Connect workshop will be held May 27 for review and final editing of recommendations for blueprints to guide economic development throughout the village and to build on downtown revitalization.
To help receive input, there's a survey available on the Glenview Connect website, www.glenviewconnect.com. The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete, and those who complete the surveys will have a chance to win a $100 gift card.
Techny Basin Trail readied
The second stage of the resurfacing of the Techny Basin Trail is near completion. The final surface was scheduled to be placed on Wednesday, and the eastern and southern section of the path is set for reopening on May 20.
The project removed the 10-foot-wide existing asphalt path and replaced it with new asphalt and an aggregate base.
