Glenview in 60 seconds
Last chance
Candidates have until May 17 to submit applications to serve a two-year term on the Village of Glenview board of trustees.
The vacancy to the seven-member board was created when former trustee Michael Jenny was sworn in as village president on May 4. Board vacancies are filled by appointment of the village president with the consent of the board.
Those interested are asked to submit a statement of interest and a resume. The submission should explain why the candidate should be considered and what skills he or she would bring to the position. Candidates must be registered voters in Glenview and have lived in the village for at least a year.
Applications may be submitted by email or online. For the appropriate addresses and further information, visit the village website, www.glenview.il.us, and look to "Community Headlines" on the site's landing page.
That Titan touch
The fish were biting just well enough for Glenbrook South High School's bass fishing team to advance out of sectionals to the Illinois High School Association final tournament.
Titans anglers pulled 6 pounds, 4 ounces of bass out of the Skokie Lagoons on May 6, just 4 ounces more than a pair of boys from Taft High School in Chicago.
Driver Justin Zummo's team includes Hyun Bark, Sean Kim, Aiden Osakada and Ryan Sutton. They'll advance to the state final May 21-22 on Carlyle Lake, Carlyle.
Window art
Youth Services is leading a fun window painting initiative that will decorate the storefronts of various sponsoring businesses.
Volunteers are painting windows from May 13-15. There may still be openings left to help; email Jennifer Fitch at jennifer.fitch@ysgn.org.
From May 16-23 everyone is invited to walk the "painted window path" and visit stores for special promotions. The first 100 participants on May 16 will receive a gift bag. More fun still, window washing for those who request it will take place the week of May 24.
For questions about Youth Services' window painting event, contact events manager Erin Miller at erin.miller@ysgn.org.
Reorganization
At a Northbrook/Glenview District 30 meeting on April 29, the district board of education reorganized its positions.
Vice President Nancy Artz, who joined the board in 2015, was unanimously elected as the new president. Jeff Zuercher took Artz's place as vice president. He and Keith Karchmar resumed their positions on the board and were joined by newly elected member Dr. Stephanie Yohannan.
Michele Polina and Terry Wolf were appointed as co-secretaries of the board until June 30, 2023.
The meeting also featured the end of the term of Ursula Sedlak as board president. A member of the board since 2013, she was board president the past two years.
This fall the district will see the return of daily in-person instruction for all students - at Willowbrook for students in kindergarten through fifth grade; at Wescott for kindergarten through fifth grade; and at Maple for sixth through eighth grades.
They're back
Kohl's Children's Museum, 2100 Patriot Blvd., is reopening for general admission and members-only hours on June 2, subject to a number of conditions.
Guests must reserve time slots for a two-hour session, in 15-minute increments, as the museum will be operating initially at 25% capacity. Nonmesh masks that cover both the nose and mouth are required for everyone 2 and older. Individual exhibits will be closed for brief periods for cleaning throughout the day.
Kohl's cafe will not be open for food purchases, and food will not be allowed in the exhibit areas. Guests are encouraged to bring bottled water, spill-proof mugs or sippy cups, which will be allowed in the exhibit areas.
Reservations are currently being taken through June 20. Tickets to the museum's SummerBurst outdoor special event must be purchased separately. (SummerBurst offers STEAM-focused outdoor events every Tuesday through Sunday from June 2-Aug. 29.)
Currently, reservations are being taken for a May 26 member preview.
For details about the reopening, including membership and guest pricing, visit kohlchildrensmuseum.org.
Another opening
Also back open for free drop-in visitation, under COVID-19 protocols, is The Grove Interpretive Center, 1421 Milwaukee Ave. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
There's a turtle habitat, "Turtle Island," that includes a 100-pound alligator snapping turtle. There's a skeleton of a prehistoric giant sloth. There's a 10-foot-tall Alaskan brown bear - a grizzly.
There's also much to learn about the long-ago originator of The Grove, a National Historic Landmark, Robert Kennicott.
Masks and social distancing will be required. No more than 25 people will be allowed in at once.
For information on The Grove, call (847) 299-6096 or visit glenviewparks.org and select facilities for the appropriate entry.
