Glenview in 60 seconds

Ahoy

Boating on Lake Glenview - kayaks, canoes and paddle boats - begins May 1.

All boaters are required to buy a Glenview Park District permit, available either at Park Center, 2400 Chestnut Ave., or on the park district website, glenviewparks.org.

To protect wildlife living along the shoreline, only one point of entry and exit will be used, the boat launch on the northwest shore of Lake Glenview. Islands and the south "lobe" of the lake will be off-limits to boaters. People are asked to not feed or disturb wildlife, especially breeding or nesting birds or animals with young.

The boating season will run through Oct. 1. For questions, contact the Park Center front desk, (847) 724-5670.

Special ed meeting

Northbrook/Glenview School District 30 will hold a special education meeting virtually at 10:30 a.m. May 7. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the district's plans for providing special education services to students with disabilities who attend private schools or home schools within the district for the 2021-22 school year.

Parents of home-schooled students who have been or may be identified with a disability and who live within the District 30 boundaries are urged to attend. If participating in the meeting, by May 4 contact Tiffani Cuneo via email at tcuneo@district30.org.

Baby Yodas

The Glenview Park District will offer children and parents a "May the 4th" parade around Lake Glenview in three time slots on May 4.

A "Star Wars" theme, people are encouraged to join the parade dressed as their favorite character from "Star Wars." A goody bag with crafts and candy is included for the $20 resident ticket price, $25 for nonresidents. Theatrical guests from Glenbrook South High School will entertain with their light saber skills at the Gallery Park Amphitheatre.

The event starts with an hourlong block from 4-5 p.m. Other time slots are 5-6 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. Children 10 and under must have an adult with them in the parade.

To register, visit Glenview Park District website, glenviewparks.org. Select the events tab on the far right, choose May from the event calendar, and scroll to the May 4 entry.

Survey says ...

The Glenview Connect process is wrapping up, with dates scheduled on May 13 and May 27 to review and edit final recommendations for future economic development in key locations and the downtown.

More public input is sought, with residents who fully complete a survey on the Glenview Connect site eligible to win a $100 gift card.

Visit www.glenviewconnect.com and scroll down until the survey is reached. It takes approximately 20 minutes to complete, and people must complete the survey - and submit an email address - to be eligible for the gift card drawing.

Police report of the week

In what has become a more common occurrence, on April 24 the Glenview Police Department took a resident's report stating that between midnight and 4 a.m. the catalytic converter on their vehicle was stolen. The auto had been parked in a lot of a business in the 3200 block of West Lake Avenue. The estimated loss was $300.

Book stroll

Willowbrook School, 2500 Happy Hollow Road, Glenview, has partnered with the Northbrook Public Library to offer a "book stroll" through the field behind the school, from May 10-24.

This book stroll in particular, based on the children's book, "Rescuing Mrs. Birdley," is a good way for parents and their children to get outside, get a little exercise, and enjoy a book along the way.

Aaron Reynolds' picture book, "Rescuing Mrs. Birdley," describes what a young nature enthusiast does when she spies her teacher in the "wild," a grocery store - return her to her natural habitat, the school.

Because this book stroll is on Willowbrook School grounds, people outside the school community are advised to visit the field on evenings or weekends when school is not in session.
