Cubs' early-inning run explosion was best since 2009
Friday marked the first time the Cubs had scored 10 or more runs in the first two innings since Aug. 14, 2009.
Here are few details from that day: It was a Friday day game at Wrigley Field against Pittsburgh, Charlie Morton was the opposing starter, and the Cubs scored 4 runs in the first, then 10 in the second.
The run fest began with a Sam Fuld triple and Kosuke Fukudome blasted a 3-run homer in the first inning. The second inning featured 10 runs on 8 hits, 2 walks, a hit batsman and no home runs. Koyie Hill tripled to start the second inning, and it featured 2-run doubles by Jake Fox and Derrek Lee, who finished the day with 7 RBI.
The Cubs eventually won the game 17-2, Randy Wells was the winning pitcher and the Cubs ended the day in second place, 4½ games behind St. Louis in the NL Central.
• Cubs radio announcer Pat Hughes will make his Marquee Network television debut Sunday, the team announced. Hughes will call Sunday's game with Jim DeShaies.
