Glenview in 60 seconds

Diaper dandies

Guild 35 of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church is most appreciative to OLPH parishioners and the greater Glenview community for its generosity toward the guild's Diaper Drive.

The drive netted more than 34,000 diapers. These items often fall through the cracks for people of need, as they are not covered by the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP).

Diaper Drive co-chairs Gretchen Conlon and Katie Santucci said the donated diapers will benefit families through the OLPH Parish center and its four sharing parishes - Saint Sabina Church, St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Our Lady of Tepeyac and Saint James - and the Maryville Crisis Nursery, Catholic Charities and the Northfield Township Food Pantry.

All about trees

At its board meeting April 8, the Village of Glenview board of trustees voted to join the Plant Trees for Communities Initiative started by the Chicago Region Trees Initiative. The goal of the yearlong effort is to plant one tree in each community and Chicago ward in 2021, for a total of 390 new trees.

Glenview will plant its tree at Glenbrook South High School on Arbor Day, April 30.

Glenview has entered into a contract with Great Lakes Urban Forestry Management of Batavia to analyze and create the Urban Forestry Management Plan. The Batavia firm did a plan for the Glenview Park District in 2020. The new one is expected to be completed this fall.

In other tree news, Glenview was awarded an $8,000 grant to complete a tree inventory and develop a management plan for its trees. The money came from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forest Core Grant Program, administered by the Morton Arboretum and the Chicago Region Trees Initiative.

The grant will help Glenview better manage its suburban forest by the number of trees, their size, species and condition. The analysis will identity opportunities to increase planting and will help create a long-term, comprehensive urban forest management plan.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Arbor Day Foundation have designated Glenview a "Tree City" for the past 36 years. There are an estimated 26,000 trees in village parkways.

Speaking of trees ...

The Glenview Park District is offering a couple activities pertaining to Earth Day, which is April 22. This year is the 51st anniversary of Earth Day.

On April 18, people can decorate reusable shopping bags at The Grove, 1421 Milwaukee Ave. Reusable shopping bags help reduce the impact of plastic bags on the environment.

The park district will provide all materials. The resident fee for this is $12, nonresident fee is $15. Advance registration is required.

From 5-6 p.m. April 22, The Grove's natural resources manager, Meredith Churchman, will offer a virtual presentation about gardening with native plants. She'll talk about the benefits of using native plants and how to select the right ones for different environmental conditions. She'll also address how to turn landscaping into a haven for pollinators and other wildlife. The fee for this presentation is $5.

For information on how to participate in these events, call (847) 724-5670.

Police report of the week

At 2:51 p.m. April 7, a Brandon Road resident told Glenview Police that someone had removed the catalytic converter from their vehicle during overnight hour. The loss was reported as $500.

Everything must go

It's a little late in the game, but until April 16 the Village of Glenview will accept unwanted yard signs for recycling, such as the 275 political signs the village recently picked up in parkways.

The village has established two yard sign recycling stations adjacent to the Public Works' north entrance along Shermer Road, north of East Lake Avenue. Residents can drop off yard signs and metal stakes through April 16 for recycling.

All aboard

As more people return to work, on April 12 Metra added service to three of its lines, the BNSF, Milwaukee District North and the North Central Service. On the Milwaukee District North Line four trains will be added and two outbound train schedules will be adjusted. For details, visit twww.metrarail.com/node/8235.
