Longmeyer honored for 40 years of service in Schaumburg

While Election Day on Tuesday marked the start of public service for many successful candidates throughout the Northwest suburbs, it also saw the retirement of George Longmeyer from more than 40 years of dedication to the Schaumburg community.

Longmeyer did not seek reelection this year to the Schaumburg Park District's board of commissioners, to which he was first appointed in March 2000.

The two decades he put on the park board followed his retirement as Schaumburg's longtime village manager. Longmeyer initially served as Schaumburg's assistant village manager from 1980 to 1986, then as village manager until 1998.

Among the village's accomplishments while he was manager was the redevelopment of Town Square and the purchase of the Schaumburg Airport.

During the last 21 years on the park district board, the community has seen such new amenities as The Sport Center, the Kay Wojcik Conservation Area, Atcher Island Water Park, Olympic Park, Bison's Bluff Nature Playground and the renovation of the Schaumburg Golf Club.

"George brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the park board, and he was integral to many of the services and amenities the district introduced over the last 21 years," Schaumburg Park District Executive Director Tony LaFrenere said.

"We are grateful for his service to the community. He will be greatly missed."

Last month, the Schaumburg village board recognized Longmeyer's service to the community with a proclamation designating Thursday, April 8 as "George Longmeyer Day" in the village.
