Glenview in 60 seconds

Well-deserved retirement

After 38 years at the Glenview Public Library, assistant director Jane Berry retired on March 31.

Coming out of Long Island University, she started in Glenview in 1983 as a substitute librarian in the Youth Services Department. She became the library's first Young Adult librarian, and during her career served as collection manager and in Adult Services.

Berry became assistant director in 1997, and even spent a spell as interim director in 2002. Upon her retirement she'd been assistant director for 24 years.

A Glenview Public Library release stated her favorite times at the library included meeting the late Pulitzer Prize winner and United States poet laureate Gwendolyn Brooks, celebrating the library's 75th anniversary, and helping plan the construction of the current library building.

"After so many years of thinking a new building would never happen, being in this new library is almost like a dream come true," she was quoted as saying.

In the affirmative

Scott Harris, director of the debate program at the University of Kansas, reported that after three days at the National Debate Tournament, this year a remote event hosted by Harvard, Glenview resident and Glenbrook South graduate Michael Scott and teammate Mickey McMahon had advanced to the tournament's elimination round as a fourth seed.

McMahon and Scott, a superstar in debate at Glenbrook South before graduating in 2019, went 7-1 to reach the single-elimination round. They beat teams from Louisville, Southwestern College, George Mason, Rochester, Kentucky, Wake Forest and Minnesota, the University of Kansas said. The Jayhawks' combo's only loss was a 2-1 split decision to Georgetown.

Reaching the Sweet 16 of National Debate, McMahon and Scott, a Kansas sophomore and repeat tournament qualifier, was eliminated Monday by Michigan.
