Elgin man convicted of robbing gas station

A Kane County jury has found a 30-year-old Elgin man guilty of armed robbery with a firearm.

The jury convicted Jeffrey D. Richardson on March 19, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office.

Richardson was charged with robbing a Citgo gasoline station along Larkin Avenue on May 1, 2019. He displayed a loaded handgun and robbed the clerk of $1,240, according to prosecutors. The clerk was not injured.

Authorities say Richardson was apprehended seven minutes later by Elgin police officers in the backyard of a home less than a half-mile away. Police found the cash he stole in a bush in the yard, according to the news release.

Richardson is scheduled to appear before Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler on April 14 for sentencing. He faces a sentence of 21 to 45 years in prison. He has been held at the Kane County jail, in lieu of $150,000 bail, since his arrest.
