West Chicago pledges support for monarch butterflies

West Chicago residents are encouraged to plant milkweed and other nectar producers to boost monarch butterfly populations, which are in decline.

West Chicago is designating March 31 as "Mayors' Monarch Pledge Day," a reaffirmation of a National Wildlife Federation pledge first taken by Mayor Ruben Pineda in 2017.

"Cities, towns and counties play a pivotal role in advancing monarch butterfly conservation in urban and suburban areas," said Patrick Fitzgerald, senior director of community wildlife at the NWF.

In 2019, West Chicago celebrated The Year of the Butterfly with a collaborative project that brought 36 artfully decorated wooden butterflies to public gardens throughout the community.
