NORTHBROOK IN 60 SECONDS

League of Women Voters Candidate Forums

The League of Women Voters of Glenview/Glencoe will present a series of remote candidate forums for local contested races on the April 6 consolidated election ballot.

Village of Northbrook residents may submit questions for the candidate races by email to lwvglens@gmail.com.

On March 4 (question deadline March 2) the forum will address Northfield Township supervisor, assessor and clerk candidates.

March 6 (question deadline March 4): Northfield Township trustees.

March 11 (question deadline March 9): Village of Northbrook president and trustees.

March 13 (question deadline March 11): West Northfield District 31 school board.

Due to the large number of candidates running for the Glenview High Schools District 225 school board, a modified forum format will be held March 7 (question deadline March 5).

All forum candidates will meet remotely using the Zoom platform. Forums will be prerecorded without an audience. Moderators will be from outside the boundaries of the contested race.

Recordings will be posted on the League of Women Voters of Glenview/Glencoe website, lwvglens.org, within 24 hours of the forum for on-demand viewing.

Residents may submit questions for the candidate races by email to lwvglens@gmail.com no later than two days prior to the forum to which they apply. Forum questions will be selected from those submitted.

Questions should be generally applicable to all candidates and relate to specific issues within the jurisdiction. They should also include which race the question pertains to and the home address of the sender.

Great cause, great voices

Northbrook-based Keshet, which for 36 years has provided programs for children and adults with intellectual challenges whether in the Chicago area or through international consultation and training, will present its annual fundraiser, "Raising Voices," on March 4 starting at 7 p.m. This year, given conditions, it will be held remotely.

In addition to raising critical funds, Raising Voices will include musical performances by the Keshet Inclusive Choir with the Chicago Children's Choir, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, pianist Luke Greenebaum, the Ravinia Ramblers Trio and Kodi Lee, winner of "America's Got Talent."

The event also will honor steadfast Keshet supporters Bob and Amy Greenebaum. They've supported Keshet for 25 years, since their son, Luke, entered Keshet's kindergarten program in 1996.

Opportunities abound to support Keshet through the Raising Voices fundraiser. Tickets run from $50 individual tickets to a $600 "elite" ticket. Sponsorships are available at $5,000 and $2,500 levels. People may also simply donate to Keshet.

After purchasing tickets, an email and text message will be sent with the link to Raising Voices 24 hours beforehand, and just before the event.

For information, visit Keshet's website, keshet.org, or keshet.org/voices.

Good golly

The Molly Maid residential cleaning franchise has relocated one of its strongest offices to Northbrook from Highland Park. Owned by Tom Blank and Robert Dillon, this office at 3150 Doolittle Drive, between Lindbergh Lane and Academy Drive, has been part of the Molly Maid franchise system for the past 23 years.

A key facet of Molly Maid is its commitment to an in-home estimate before beginning a routine cleaning service. Cleaners use correct personal protective equipment, and in cases in which this is not an option Molly Maid will provide that service with a virtual, in-home estimate. Companywide, Molly Maid annually performs more than 1.7 million home cleanings in the United States.

The office owned by Blank and Dillon is a charter member of the Ms. Molly Foundation, started in 1996, that supports domestic violence shelters around the country. A portion of every house cleaning is donated to the Ms. Molly Foundation.

Periodically, such as in October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, or in December for the holidays, their franchise will collect items for donation to A Safe Place in Zion and Waukegan. The office has also donated gift certificates as auction items to help nonprofit fundraisers.

To reach the new Doolittle Drive office of Molly Maid, call (847) 681-1800 or visit www.mollymaid.com.

Care for the caregiver

The North Shore Senior Center is offering a virtual nine-week program, "Caregiver Stress Busting," for family caregivers of people with dementia or Alzheimer's disease. The program will be held from 10:30 a.m.-noon on Thursdays from March 11-May 6.

Held on Zoom, the program will teach stress management techniques including meditation, music, art and journaling, plus relaxation and coping strategies.

To register, call Heather Resnick at (847) 784-6041 or through email at hesnick@nssc.org.

Action

The Northbrook Public Library has an interesting pre-Academy Awards movie program coming up in March, the Virtual Past Oscar Recognition Film Series.

In the morning of each Wednesday in March registered patrons will receive an email with a YouTube link to view an introduction to a selected film, presented by library staff. Then the viewer can watch the film at a different link that is provided with the series information. There are 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. showings on March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.

The films selected are not the usual fare, but all were at least nominated for an Academy Award: "Dodsworth" (1936), "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955, with Frank Sinatra), "8½ (1963), "Fiddler on the Roof" (1971) and "The Oscar" (1966).

A library card and registration are required. For information on the program and instructions on how it works, start by visiting the Northbrook Public Library website, visit.northbrook.info, select "Events" and choose a Virtual Past Oscar Recognition Film Series entry on the March calendar.
