Sunday fire at Glen Town Center blamed on careless smoking
One person was hospitalized after fire in an apartment above a retail space in The Glen Town Center on Sunday, officials said.
The Glenview Fire Department just before 7 p.m. to the 2600 block of Navy Boulevard for a report of smoke in the building, according to a news release.
A resident directed crews to a third-floor apartment, and when they entered, they found a person in one of the bedrooms. That person was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood to be treated for burns, according to fire officials. There was no word on the person's condition, other than they were stable.
The fire was contained to a mattress, according to officials, and extinguished by a sprinkler head in the room of origin prior to the arrival of the fire crews.
An initial investigation said the cause of the fire was due to careless smoking. The initial estimate of damage of $20,000 was mostly related to water damage from the sprinkler. A second-floor apartment and a first-floor business also suffered water damage, the release said. The scene was cleared just after 9 p.m. 9:13 p.m.
The Glenview Fire Department received assistance from Evanston, Mount Prospect, Niles, Northbrook, Northfield and North Maine.
