Wauconda Senior Club celebrates 50th anniversary
The Wauconda Senior Club recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. More than 40 members and guests were in attendance, along with entertainer Tom Cash, who did a presentation of popular songs through the years.
The event took place May 6 at the Wauconda Township Hall, which was decorated with table flowers and scrolls of a brief history of the senior club's beginnings and a display board of photos of activities through the years.
Acting President Ann Petersen opened the anniversary celebration party luncheon with greetings and spoke on the history of club activities and the hope of future meetings to come.
Guests included newly elected Wauconda Village President Jeff Sode, who spoke about his background and plans for the future, and township Supervisor Lincoln Knight and Senior Adviser Lisa Knight. Past Supervisor Glenn Swanson paid a short visit to say farewell.
Beginning in 1971, senior citizens from Wauconda and Island Lake formed a club that began meeting monthly. Eventually, the two groups split as membership increased.
Through the years, the Wauconda Senior Club has enjoyed meeting together, making friendships and going on trips to Fireside Theater at Christmastime for a play, luncheon and Christmas shopping; Drury Lane or White Pines for plays; and Lake Geneva for a boat tour.
The group also offers presentations that provided useful information, from the police department and Catholic Charities, who help seniors, to mayors and township supervisors, who gave updates on city activities.
They have enjoyed annual luncheons for their anniversary, the Fourth of July potluck, ice cream socials, Thanksgiving buffets and their special Christmas lunch at a local banquet hall, all with entertainment.
They have enjoyed a variety of talented local performers, singers, dancers, impersonators of famous people and musicians.
Every few years the club elects members of the board - president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, membership - along with volunteers who agree to help with parties, trips, ways and means, programs and public relations.
It takes many minds and hands to make the meetings enjoyable for all, and it has worked for years. The club hopes for many more with the help of senior citizens who enjoy getting together.
