Glenview news, briefly

Congratulations

The winners of the third annual Village of Glenview Environmental Sustainability Awards were announced at the village board meeting Tuesday.

In the Innovation category, Blue Star Recyclers, which recycles electronics and creates jobs for people with disabilities, won the gold award. Wiseacre Farm, which grows vegetables without soil and drastically reduces water usage, took the silver; Glenshore Condominiums received the bronze award.

In the Leadership category, Tres Mimi won gold, the sole award given this year in that category. The woman's apparel store focuses on using sustainable and organic fabrics.

In the Education and Outreach category, the sole winner was New to You. Formerly The Resale Shop at Glenview Community Church, the store's motto describes its mission: "Rethink, Repurpose, Restore."

Watch your PPPs and Qs

The Glenview Chamber of Commerce will host a Zoom presentation on the second round of the Small Business Administration's Paycheck Protection Program from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 7. Advance registration is required.

Addressing the chamber for this free "Access the Experts" offering is Robert Rounsfull of Rounsfull Financial Group. He'll provide an educational session on the updated PPP provisions, other business assistance found in the new COVID relief legislation, and how to apply to maximize the potential for funding.

Registration information may be accessed by visiting glenviewchamber.com. The Access the Experts session is located on a calendar found by clicking the "view all events" line on under "Upcoming Events."

Christmas tree recycling

Until Jan. 31, Glenview residents can bring their Christmas trees to seven different locations for recycling. The trees will be used either as mulch for parks or submerged in Lake Glenview to be used as fish habitat.

Collection points are: Glenview Public Works Service Center, 2498 E. Lake Ave.; Johns Park, 2101 Central Road; Flick Park, 3600 Glenview Road; Cunliff Park, 540 Echo Lane; Cole Park, 1031 Kenilworth Ave.; Willow Park, 2600 Greenwood Ave.; Gallery Park, 2001 Patriot Blvd.

Ornaments, lights and tinsel should be removed from all trees, and they should not be covered by plastic disposal bags.

New COVID test site

A free test site for COVID-19 has been established at the Flick Park field house, 3600 Glenview Road, on the north side of the park. Appointments must be made to take advantage - do it quick if desired, many time slots are already unavailable - and people must bring an insurance card or state-issued identification card, though no insurance is required and there is no out-of-pocket expense.

To register for a time slot, visit the website, www.eventbrite.com/e/covid-19-testing-tickets-134676233239.

Hours for the testing are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Free parking is available.

Environmental stewards

The village reminds us that applications are being accepted until March 1 for the Illinois Conservation Foundation's 2021 Conservation Achievement Scholarship program.

Up to four one-time scholarships of $2,000 are given to outstanding high school seniors in Illinois who have demonstrated effective, voluntary and long-term dedication to the preservation, protection, enhancement and promotion of Illinois' natural resources. Since the scholarships were initiated in 2005, $146,000 has been awarded to 71 scholarship winners.

For information or to apply, call (217) 785-2003 or visit dnr.icf@illinois.gov.

Wily coyotes

The village also noted there have been several coyote sightings recently around town. The village laid out several pieces of advice to minimize contact with the animals.

It advised to secure garbage containers, and not to leave pet food or water outdoors. Birds also attract coyotes to a property, so if necessary avoid the use of bird seed.

The village recommended people should bring in their pets at night, since coyotes are nocturnal. Fencing and outside lighting, triggered by motion sensors, will deter coyotes from entering a property.

Finally, the village advises people to put a leash on their dogs at all times when walking them. And if a yard is not fenced, use a leash on the property to keep a dog close by.

Police report of the week

On the evening of Jan. 2, a Lily Lane resident reported to Glenview Police that someone damaged three strings of Christmas lights on the front of their residence. The reported loss was $51.
