Experience Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life through a CLC celebration
In most years the community is called to treat Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day "on", not a day off, and volunteer their time in honor of the civil rights leader. The same is true at College of Lake County (CLC) which in the past has partnered with United Way of Lake County to organize hundreds of volunteers to work projects at area social service agencies and schools. Unfortunately, the 2021 holiday will not be treated the same due to safety considerations related to COVID-19. However, the day will not pass without recognition. At least one CLC tradition will continue: a dramatic storytelling of Dr. King's life and impact on civil rights.
"This year we are partnering with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Chi Lambda chapter, based in Waukegan," said CLC Multicultural Coordinator Beverly Phelps. "Dr. King was a member of this fraternity. Normally they would hold a breakfast in his honor. This year they are partnering with us to present 'Know Your History to Guide Your Future,' a virtual event."
The virtual gathering will take place Monday, Jan. 25 beginning at 6 p.m. As a part of the event, Marcus Gentry of Marcus Gentry Associates will present his one man play, "I Have a Dream: A King's Journey." The performance is designed with an educational focus, centered around historical content. See a full description here: https://www.marcusgentry.com/i-have-a-dream
Details on how to attend the virtual gathering will be posted on the fraternity's Facebook page, Lake County Alphas: https://www.facebook.com/lakecountyalphas/
