Addison man gets 25 years for 2nd-degree murder of two
An Addison man was sentenced to 25 years in prison Friday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the deaths of two men in 2017.
Jorge L. Vargas, 22, had originally been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of 17-year-old Kevin Bustos of Addison and 20-year-old Alberto Rios of Villa Park. He was also charged with attempted first-degree murder of a third person.
According to authorities, Rios had gone to his ex-girlfriend's apartment on Elizabeth Drive in Addison on May 6, 2017. Rios had two children who lived with the ex-girlfriend.
Vargas was there, and the two argued. After leaving, Rios fired a gun in the air outside the building, according to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney.
Rios also left a threatening message on a mutual acquaintance's phone, saying he would go back to the apartment and kill everyone, according to the news release.
Rios returned to the apartment building about 20 minutes later with Bustos and the other person. Vargas fired a gun out the third-story apartment window, injuring the three men.
Bustos, the driver, drove off, but crashed into a tree.
Vargas was sentenced to 12½ years on each charge to be served consecutively.
The second-degree murder charge states Vargas had an "unreasonable belief" that the circumstances at the time would justify the killings.
All the other charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
