Girl Scouts Earn Silver Award

Girl Scouts from Mount Prospect and Des Plaines Troop 45255 earned their Silver Awards this summer by creating an online resource for younger Girl Scouts on how to do different types of flag ceremonies.

The Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout in middle school can earn, and requires at least 50 hours of work on a project. The leaders of Troop 45255 over the years have made a regular practice of having the girls hold a flag ceremony to open meetings. As the girls have grown up over the years, their confidence has grown. The troop has led camp opening ceremonies, taught new leaders, and lead large public flag ceremonies with Boy Scouts over the last five years. The girls hope they can inspire and empower leaders and girls to take the lead with confidence.

Emme, one of the seven Silver Award team members said, "My experience during this time has been enlightening. I worked with my fellow Scouts to show respect and to teach other girls to respect the flag. All of us girls pitched in and created this video to educate a younger or not informed audience the flag ceremony. This video hopefully inspires other girls to step up and do a flag ceremony, correctly and curiously. I truly see the value of learning this skill and will remember and use it for the rest of my life, and hopefully other girls will too."

The girls had to change their project from an in person event to an online format, which was not an easy task over the Spring and Summer. Now that it's complete, we can share the website the girls created with the community. The website is https://sites.google.com/view/girlscoutflagceremonies
