Bears finalize 53-man roster
The Bears finalized their 53-man roster Saturday with no major surprises among the moves.
Saturday's cuts included:
QB Tyler Bray
RB Artavis Pierce
WR Rodney Adams
WR Reggie Davis
WR Thomas Ives
TE Jesper Horsted
OL Dieter Eiselen
OL Sam Mustipher
OL Lachavious Simmons
OL Badara Traore
DE LaCale London
DT Abdullah Anderson
DT Trevon McSwain
LB Isaiah Irving (injured)
LB Ledarius Mack
LB Rashad Smith
DB Xavier Crawford
DB Stephen Denmark
DB Kevin Toliver
K Cairo Santos
Players are eligible to be added to the 16-player practice squad - up from 10 this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic - beginning Sunday.
The decision to waive Pierce likely means the Bears believe starting running back David Montgomery will return sooner rather than later from a groin injury he suffered when he slipped during practice Aug. 26. As of now, the Bears will open the season next weekend against the Detroit Lions with three running backs on the active roster: Montgomery, Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall. Cordarrelle Patterson is listed at wide receiver on the depth chart, but the veteran has practiced with the running backs in training camp.
A majority of these names will likely be added to the team's practice squad, including Santos. Kicker Eddy Pineiro is still dealing with a groin injury, and head coach Matt Nagy previously said the team would like to have a contingency plan at kicker due to the pandemic.
