Yolmer Sanchez back on White Sox roster

A familiar face joined the White Sox's roster Monday in Minnesota.

Yolmer Sanchez, who played for the Sox from 2014-19, is back after having his contract purchased from Schaumburg.

"He's been around here since the inception of his career," manager Rick Renteria said. "I think as he starts getting comfortable again with his teammates and being around them, the old Sanchy will emerge. I think everybody's happy to see him."

Known for his strong defensive skills and flair for having fun on the field, the 28-year-old Sanchez signed with the White Sox as a free agent last Wednesday.

Sanchez agreed to a minor-league contract with the Giants in January but never played for San Francisco after injuring his back during summer camp.

Even though he won a Gold Glove with the Sox last season at second base, Sanchez was non-tendered after hitting .252/.318/.321 with 2 home runs and 43 RBI.

To clear a roster spot, the White Sox designated infielder Ryan Goins for assignment.

"A super utility, he can play third and obviously you have seen him play second, short," Renteria said of Sanchez. "He has played a lot of third for us in the recent past and played it very well."
