Moncada sits out series opener vs. Cubs

In a normal season, Yoan Moncada typically has hamstring troubles and general leg soreness.

This is an abnormal season, and the third baseman's legs have been a constant source of concern for the White Sox.

It didn't help that Moncada missed the first two weeks of summer camp after testing positive for COVID-19, but he got into shape as quickly as possible and was in the starting lineup when the regular season opened on July 24.

Moncada had two days off through the Sox's first 26 games, and the switch-hitter got another needed rest break Friday.

"Just managing his legs a little bit," manager Rick Renteria said. "He's been kind of grinding it out a little bit. Maybe this will just calm it down and we'll be able to get him back in there tomorrow. That's basically all it is."

The Sox are thin at third base behind Moncada. Ryan Goins took his place Friday night against the Cubs.

"We're constantly keeping our eye on how he's moving around the bases and how he's reacting," Renteria said of Moncada. "I think just in having conversations, it was probably a good idea right now to give him a little break today."
