NeedleArts Guild looks at 'Improvisational Quilting'

The North Suburban NeedleArts will hold a virtual meeting at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday Sept. 1. The guest speaker will be author and fiber artist Cindy Grisdela, who will lecture on "Improvisational Quilting."

Have you ever wondered how to create an improv quilt without a pattern? Grisdela will share her tips and tricks in this lecture about the process for working improvisationally from start to finish.

Grisdela, from Reston, Virginia, is an award-winning fiber artist with more than 30 years experience creating eye-catching quilts. She specializes in improvisational quilt designs and dense free motion quilting. She travels all over the country teaching and lecturing to guilds and groups.

Grisdela is the author of "Artful Improv: Explore Color Recipes, Building Blocks & Free Motion Quilting." Her quilt designs have been published in numerous books and magazines. She has also appeared on Quilting Arts TV.

Guests are welcome to join the meeting. There is no charge for first-time guests. If you are a guest or want to join, contact the North Suburban NeedleArts Guild at www.nsng.org. A link will then be sent to you for the meeting. Grisdela's lecture will follow the business segment of the meeting.

Grisdela will also hold a virtual workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 2-4. Cost is $75 for members and $95 for nonmembers. The workshop fee includes one hour of one-on-one time with Grisdela.

In the workshop you will learn how to create improv blocks and put them together into an original design. Once you have the techniques down, you can use them to create quilts, pillows, table runners and more. Grisdela talks about how to choose colors and use "coping strips" to complete the composition and make it more interesting. There's no measuring or precise cutting and each quilt will be unique.

The workshop will be online only and information and links will be given upon acceptance of registration. To register, visit www.nsng.org.

The North Suburban NeedleArts Guild is a Chicago area organization that draws members from Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, and the greater Chicago area.
