Help an adult learn English with Literacy Volunteers

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley is hosting a free tutor training workshop for residents who want to help adults learn English.

The four-session workshop will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 14-23, at Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave. in St. Charles.

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley helps adults communicate in English by matching them with trained volunteer tutors who provide lessons once each week.

Volunteers also help their adult learners adapt to life in our community so they can understand how to live successfully in the United States.

If you know English, you can teach English to an adult who is waiting to learn.

You do not need a background in education or a second language to be effective.

Adult learners say that the best tutors are patient, listen, and give practical information.

As volunteers see their adult learners get more comfortable and fluent in English, they know that they are making a difference.

Volunteers also benefit as they broaden their understanding of cultures, values, and lifestyles different from their own.

The program provides material and instruction so that anyone can be a volunteer tutor. If you have an hour each week, they can fit tutoring into your schedule.

Workshop attendance will be limited to six volunteers so social distancing can be maintained. Face masks are required.

If you can help, visit lvfv.org/events/trainingschedule to register or call/text Peg at (630) 584-4428 for more information.

The next workshop sesssions will be 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 13-22.
