Glenbrook 225 responds to student's use of racial slur in social media post

Glenbrook South High School administrators said there would be "appropriate and restorative consequences" for a student who used a racial slur in a social media post, officials said.

The school was notified Aug. 11 of the post that includes the use of the N-word, and the next day, school administrators, headed by Principal Dr. Lauren Fagel, sent an email to families addressing the post.

"Glenbrook South is committed to confronting racism and all forms of discrimination," the email said. "There is no tolerance for this kind of behavior. We recognize the pain such videos cause to not only a direct recipient of the racist word, but also to all those who are historically marginalized. We, as an institution, pledge to administer appropriate and restorative consequences for the young person who said the word, and we also pledge to support in all ways possible those who are hurt by it."

No consequences were detailed by school administration due to it being "a matter of student records and therefore confidentiality is protected by law," according to Karen Geddeis, Glenbrook High School District 225 director of public relations and communications.

The student who posted the message on Instagram later apologized for it, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

In addition to Fagel, the email was signed by three assistant principals, two associate principals and Glenbrook South athletic director Steve Rockrohr. They said several groups have recently been created to uphold student identity and equity at Glenbrook South, including the Student Equity Team that includes student leaders from the school's Black Student Union, Unidos, Students Organized Against Racism, the Muslim Student Association and the Sexuality and Gender Alliance.
