Elmhurst seeks input on train station improvements
Elmhurst officials will be working with an engineering firm, CDM Smith, to solicit public input beginning later this month on final design plans for an improvement project at the downtown Metra station.
The site last was updated in the 1980s and plans call for construction of new inbound and outbound stations and warming shelters to expand commuter-waiting areas. A new pedestrian tunnel is proposed at York Street to provide a mid-platform crossing for commuters and a pedestrian bypass at a busy crossing in downtown. ADA access improvements will be added to all areas of the station.
Work on a final engineering design will begin after the city collects input to influence the architectural character of the new station.
The city has received multiple federal, state and agency grants totaling more than $20 million to help fund the project.
