Summer Camp Begins at the North Suburban YMCA
As Illinois opens to more businesses during Phase Four of the Restore Illinois plan, The North Suburban YMCA, adopting the safety standards of the CDC Field Guide for the American Camping Association and the Y-USA summer day camps safety guidelines, opened its summer day camp program at its facilities on Monday June 29.
"Safety is our number one priority. We're following all CDC camp guidelines including frequent hand-washing, disinfecting, social distancing as much as possible, and wearing masks when social distancing can't be accommodated," said Kathy Fielding, CEO of the NSYMCA, adding, "We know more than ever, children need to spend time outdoors practicing social, emotional, and problem-solving skills. The Y Day Camps offers a place where kids can be kids in a safe environment."
In addition, the NSYMCA has taken the following precautions for campers and staff members:
• All camp families will submit a pre-camp health status questionnaire.
• Upon arrival, every camper will be temperature checked then directed to outdoor hand-washing stations to wash their hands.
• The majority of camp time will take place outdoors.
• The Y has installed six portable outdoor sinks on the Y's campus.
• All camps are divided into individual cohorts ensuring small groups.
• Each camp counselor is equipped with PPE crates to ensure frequent disinfecting.
The Y summer camps run a total of 7 weeks from June 29 to August 14, and there are spaces still available in the Y's Traditional Camp, Specialty Camps, and Sports Camp. Parents can register their children for half-day (9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m.) or full-day (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) sessions by camp week by visiting www.nsymca.org. The Y's indoor pool will be available three days a week for free swim time. The Y will not be offering any virtual camps.
"We have an excellent, experienced staff who have had extensive training on how they can help make camp safe and fun this summer. We will be adapting sports and game play, providing extra social and emotional support systems, and teaching our campers how they can practice safe hygiene techniques," stated Ricky Gonzalez, the Y's Director of Summer Camp.
