Price for new Landwehr fire station likely to exceed $6 million

Plans to replace the Glenview Fire Department's Station No. 8 took another step forward this week.

The village's plan commission on Tuesday voted 6-0 to recommend building a new station to replace the existing one at 1901 Landwehr Road. It was built in 1972, and village officials previously have said it is "nearing the end of its useful life." The new facility is projected to cost roughly $6 million, officials said. The Station No. 8 replacement proposal now will go before the village board in July.

If it gets the OK, construction will take about 9 to 12 months, according to Jeff Rogers, planning manager in the village's Community Development Department. The 13,843-square-foot building would be built from brick and cement panels, with glass to allow interior light. There will be three bays for fire department vehicles, as well as equipment storage areas, living quarters, exercise areas, a memorial garden, decontamination shower, a training room, and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, officials said.

Earlier this month, Glenview Special Projects Manager Chris Clark had discussed seeking a Rebuild Illinois fast-track construction grant of $5 million for fire station construction.

"We're obviously optimistic with the process," Clark said, "but it's hard to tell what the competition will be."
