A place to learn about Glenview's rich history
On behalf of the Glenview History Center - a warm welcome to the Glenview Herald! Its predecessor, the Cook County Herald, was one of the few sources of Glenview news at the time our Village was incorporated in 1899.
By way of introduction, the Glenview History Center, a not-for-profit organization, has been around for 55 years. Its mission is to preserve the history of the Village and its citizens. And what a rich history it is!
Here's a sample of that history:
• Glenview grew from a small agricultural hamlet into the vibrant community it is today.
• Glenview's iconic Bear statue first made its home in Glenview in 1917 and, like many Village residents, moved around a lot. Fascinating adventures!
• The old Curtiss Reynolds Airfield was intended to become Chicago's major airport at the time it was built in 1929.
• The airport's successor, Naval Air Station Glenview, played a crucial role during World War II.
• A German Prisoner of War camp existed here during World War II.
• Many businesses - large and small - have flourished in Glenview over the years.
• Some of the first solar-powered homes were built here.
• From its early days, Glenview was blessed with outstanding school, library and park systems.
We'll endeavor to tell these stories (along with many others) in future issues of this newspaper.
Back in the 1930s, our Chamber of Commerce promoted Glenview as "a Village of homes and gardens." That vision continues today - Glenview is a wonderful place to live and grow!
