Plouffe reports baseball will be back on June 10

Trevor Plouffe and Phil Hughes were teammates on the Minnesota Twins from 2014-16, and they both retired as major-league baseball players after the 2018 season.

Now working in the media, Plouffe and Hughes combined to drop some news about baseball returning from the coronavirus pandemic.

"Want some good baseball news??" Plouffe wrote on Twitter. "I just heard from multiple sources that on June 10th, Spring Training 2 will start. July 1st will be Opening Day and all teams will be playing at their home ballparks."

Plouffe is a host on the Talkin' Baseball podcast. Hughes confirmed his report, but wasn't nearly as specific.

"I've talked with multiple sources and can confirm a June 10th spring training 2 with a July 1 Opening Day proposal is expected to be on the table soon," Hughes posted on Twitter. "Trevor Plouffe had it first. I had it 2nd. Someone else will have it 3rd."

Last week, word leaked that Major League Baseball is "cautiously optimistic" the season can get started in late June or early July, with teams playing games in their own stadiums instead of Arizona only.

Under that plan, there would be three divisions of 10 teams.

To keep travel to a minimum, teams would be grouped based on geography and the Cubs and White Sox would compete in the Central division.

Cubs remember Saltwell:

The Cubs issued a news release Tuesday mourning the death of former executive Eldred R. "Salty" Saltwell, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 96.

During a 30-year career with the Cubs, Saltwell filled a variety of roles.

He was concession manager, traveling secretary, assistant secretary, assistant treasurer and secretary before moving up to general manager in 1976.

Saltwell also was a vice president and consultant with the Cubs.

Working in baseball for over 40 years, Saltwell began his career in 1947 as an usher for Sioux City in the Western League.
