Elgin police: Man faces DUI, gun charges in road rage case
A 33-year-old man is accused of driving drunk and pointing a loaded gun at a man in Elgin during a road rage incident that began in Algonquin, according to Elgin police and court records.
No one was shot or injured, authorities said.
Brian J. Kontek, of the 200 block of North Delphine Avenue in Park Ridge, is charged with four counts of felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and misdemeanors of driving under the influence of alcohol, carrying a concealed firearm while under the influence, aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon/possession of a firearm in public, and transportation of open alcohol.
Elgin police said they were called about 12:34 p.m. Friday to the 100 block of North Edison Avenue. A man was driving to his former employer on Edison Avenue and another man had followed him from Algonquin, claiming he was cut off, they said.
When the men arrived at the Edison Avenue location, Kontek got out of his car, approached the driver's side of the victim's car and pointed a gray revolver at him, police said.
"(The victim) stated he was under the impression he was about to be shot and that he felt his life was threatened," read part of the police report.
Police said they arrived soon after and found a loaded, .357-caliber Taurus revolver in Kontek's waistband. Other people at the business reported they heard screeching tires, called 911, saw Kontek with the gun and heard him say he was angry at the person in the other car, according to the report.
Kontek smelled of alcohol and field sobriety tests were administered, police said. He was taken to the police station, where he refused to answer questions, according to the report.
He has a valid Firearm Owner's Identification card but does not have a concealed carry license, according to the report.
Kontek is free on bail and is next due in court June 25. He faces a sentence ranging from probation to three years in prison if convicted of the most severe charge of aggravated unlawful use of a firearm.
