Schaumburg public works holds drawing contest for kids

Elementary school students in Schaumburg already in their second month at home can direct their energies toward a special project thanks to the village's Engineering and Public Works Department.

Young artists are encouraged to submit drawings that depict the essential services public works staff are continuing to provide the community even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Selected drawings will be featured at a future village event.

The contest is open to students from Schaumburg in kindergarten through eighth grade, though relatives of village employees are not eligible.

Artwork should be on an 8.5-by-11-inch piece of paper and can depict people, projects or vehicles.

Just some of the ways public works employees keep the community running smoothly include keeping water and sewers flowing, plowing snow, repairing potholes and maintaining streetlights, installing street signs, coordinating garbage and recycling services and fixing the vehicles that help them do all these things.

Original artwork will be accepted until 5 p.m. Friday, May 8. Participants are asked to scan their drawings and submit a digital copy by email, along with their name and age, to lwalter@schaumburg.com. There is no fee to enter.

The entries will be judged and awarded in three age categories: kindergarten through second grade, third through fifth grade, and sixth through eighth grade.

In addition to having their work showcased by the village, winners also will receive a personalized street sign and be recognized by the village board.

For more information about the contest, contact Laurie Walter at lwalter@schaumburg.com or (847) 923-6612.
