Sentencing for AJ's mom delayed

Sentencing for JoAnn Cunningham, who pleaded guilty in December to the beating death of her 5-year-old son, AJ Freund, has been postponed to July 16.

Cunningham, 37, of Crystal Lake, faces up to 60 years in prison without the possibility of parole. She was to have been sentenced April 30, but on Wednesday, McHenry County Judge Robert Wilbrandt continued the matter in light of the coronavirus crisis and state directives that no more than 10 people congregate.

AJ's father, Andrew Freund Sr., also is accused in the beating death last April in the family's Crystal Lake home. He waived his right to a jury trial and his case will be decided solely by Wilbrandt. A status hearing is scheduled April 24.
