Scholarship Assistance Fund-Dollars for Scholars Receives $25,000 Donation

Lyn Kearns believed in helping others. A working mom, who through sacrifice and dedication earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree, she knew the importance of postsecondary education.

After retiring from a successful professional career, Kearns began volunteering at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

At the same time, she began writing for the Daily Herald - specializing in articles about people giving back to their communities.

Kearns passed away on June 20, 2019.

In a tribute to Lyn, her family donated $25,000 to the Scholarship Assistance Fund - Dollars for Scholars, a community-based, nonprofit organization that raises money to help students achieve their post high school education goals.

The donation will fund one $2,500 academic scholarship, The Lyn J. Kearns Academic Scholarship, for 10 years.

The scholarship will be awarded to students majoring in education or nursing.

With college loan debt continually increasing, now more than ever, The Lyn J. Kearns Academic Scholarship will help students achieve their dreams.

Scholarship Assistance Fund - Dollars for Scholars, is an affiliate of the Dollars for Scholars® program of Scholarship America.

Scholarship America is the nation's largest nonprofit, private-sector scholarship and educational support organization.

Since its founding, Scholarship Assistance Fund - Dollars for Scholars has awarded more than $415,000 to students from the Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights, and Wheeling communities. The fund supports current high school seniors, college undergraduates and vocational students in realizing their educational dreams. With a dedicated board and support from local businesses, individuals, and other community members, the program continues to grow.

Scholarship applications are now closed for the 2020-21 school year.
