Carmel Catholic alum to discuss #yearoflove project

As part of its "Advantage: Carmel" initiative, Carmel Catholic High School will welcome back alum Jen Kramer ('88) as featured speaker in the third installment of the Spiritus Speaker Series at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, in the school's auditorium.

Kramer, who works as DePaul University's director of events, will speak about her acclaimed #yearoflove project, which in 2018 featured her writing 365 letters of appreciation and praise for strangers, family members, friends, and old acquaintances.

"The Year of Love was a social experiment that absolutely altered the course of my life and the way I go about things," Kramer said.

"While it was completely free of cost, its value was priceless. Science has proven that the experience of being grateful and being kind to other people has more mental health benefits than being a recipient of kindness, and my experiment is a testament to that research. Where I went, love showed up. Love really is everywhere, you just have to look for it."

All Spiritus Speaker Series events are free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.carmelhs.org or call (847) 566-3000.

A final Spiritus event, "Open Line, Questions of Faith," will feature Carmel religious studies teacher Mark Plaiss on Thursday, March 12.

Advantage: Carmel is a comprehensive program featuring some of the most sweeping changes in school history. Expansion and refinement of several academic programs, design and implementation of a modern classroom aesthetic, and completion of key projects already in the works characterize the multimillion-dollar initiative scheduled to be in place by 2021.

The multifaceted Advantage: Carmel is designed to have an impact on every single student who enters the building. Through Advantage: Carmel, the traditional classroom style will be totally transformed into an interactive, discussion-oriented, hands-on educational experience.

Additionally, cutting-edge programs like the Spiritus Speaker Series will welcome the surrounding community to the Carmel campus.
