Learn about Blanding's turtles at Senior Stroll Feb. 6
The Forest Preserve District of Kane County continues its Senior Stroll program during the winter months. The program moves indoors and features a nature topic. No registration is required for these free programs. Donations are accepted to cover the cost of refreshments. They consider "seniors" as anyone age 50 or older but adults of all ages are welcome.
On Thursday, Feb. 6, it will feature "Blanding's Turtle Ecology and Conservation in Kane County" from 10 a.m. to noon indoors at Barbara Belding Lodge at Brewster Creek Forest Preserve, 6N921 Route 25, St. Charles. What moves slowly, can survive over 70 years, and often lives dangerously? Biologist Bill Graser will talk about the ecology and conservation of the Blanding's turtle in Kane County. He will discuss the turtle's habitat requirements, life history, population status, and effort underway to secure the species' future in Kane County.
In March, seniors will head back outside on a leisurely stroll through a Kane County forest preserve.
On Thursday, March 5, it will be at Johnson's Mound Forest Preserve, 41W600 Hughes Road in Elburn. On Thursday, April 2, it will be at Rutland Forest Preserve, 41W230 Big Timber Road in Hampshire. On Thursday, May 7, the walk will be at Bliss Woods Forest Preserve, 5S660 Bliss Road in Sugar Grove.
