Northbrook District 27 names community member Martha Carlos to fill open Board of Education position

The Northbrook School District 27 Board of Education has appointed community member Martha Carlos to fill the vacant position on the Board. Carlos and her husband have lived in Northbrook for eight years and have three children who attend District 27 schools. She is director of communications for the University of Illinois Cancer Center. She previously was chief communications officer for the American Brain Tumor Association in Chicago and chief communications and marketing officer for American Red Cross of Chicago and Northern Illinois.

Carlos is filling a one-year term that began with the Jan. 23 Board meeting and ends on election day on April 6, 2021. She replaces Board member Frank Andreou, who left the board in December when he accepted an appointment as Cook County Circuit Court associate judge. District 27 accepted letters of intent from community members through Jan. 13, and the Board selected Carlos on Jan. 21.

Carlos has been a PTA volunteer at District 27 schools, including chairing the Philanthropy Committee at Hickory Point for several years. In addition, she is a volunteer with Hunger Free Northbrook, which works to solve the issue of hunger in the community through partnerships with local organizations, including District 27.

"I have been so impressed with our school district and the Northbrook community as a whole, and I'm honored to have been selected to serve on the Board," Carlos said. She adds that her volunteer and professional experiences have taught her many lessons that will serve her well as a School Board member. "I have learned to be a solution finder within tight budget and time constraints, create strategic plans that allow the mission to remain paramount, remain calm under pressure and identify unique opportunities for the benefit of the greater good."
