Oscar catch-up: You can watch all five documentary nominees at home
Many film buffs try their hardest to see all the movies nominated for the best picture Oscar, or all the nominated performances, before Hollywood's big night. But knocking out the nominees in the short-film and documentary categories often proves to be more difficult.
That's not the case for the best documentary feature category this year, when four of the five finalists are available on streaming services.
And the fifth airs at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, on the National Geographic cable channel, without commercials. "The Cave" chronicles an underground (literally and figuratively) hospital of the same name in Syria where men and women defy the nation's culture to work together amid the struggles of war.
The other four nominees are:
• "For Sama," another true-life tale of strife in Syria, this one about a mother and daughter in Aleppo. (Streaming on Amazon Prime)
• "American Factory," about an abandoned GM plant in Ohio and its new tenant, Chinese firm Fuyao. (Streaming on Netflix)
• "The Edge of Democracy," about the impeachment of the 36th president of Brazil. (Streaming on Netflix)
• "Honeyland," a North Macedonian film that has already made Oscar history as the first to be nominated as both best documentary feature and best international film (formerly best foreign language film) and follows one of Europe's last beekeepers. (Streaming on Hulu)
