Wauconda school to reopen after sewer line repair
Wauconda's Robert Crown School will reopen Friday after a broken sewer line forced its closure Thursday.
“The building is once again conducive for occupancy,” Wauconda Unit District 118 Superintendent Daniel Coles said.
Students and staffers were given the day off Thursday while plumbers fixed the broken line.
The problem was discovered near the end of the school day Wednesday after toilets in some bathrooms slowly started to back up, Coles said. The mess was cleaned up, but a strong odor remained.
Plumbers were called and sent cameras into the sewers to look for the cause. They discovered an underground sewer break near the parking lot on the north side of the school.
The damage likely occurred during winter break when new light poles were installed near the lot, Coles said.
In addition to the foul smell, about one-third of the school's bathrooms were rendered unusable because of the break, Coles said.
But by late Thursday afternoon, officials confidently declared the repairs completed.
