Wauconda High cheer team fundraises for oncology patients

The Wauconda High School Cheer Team led the cheer for community service this season. They decided to collect items for patients receiving treatment in the oncology department at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

The cheer team held multiple events, including one at a football game. Everyone who brought multiple items to donate could enter the "Friday Night Lights" football game at no charge. They had such positive feedback from the community that the Wauconda Fire Department joined in the efforts by inviting the team to help host an open house at the Wauconda Fire House.

The girls volunteered their time at this event and had an even larger response to add to their collection. But the efforts didn't end there.

The Wauconda Fire Department hosted an Appreciation Dinner and their fundraiser was also to collect additional items for the drive.

Other organizations, such as the Lions Park Elementary School Student Council, heard of their efforts and joined in as well.

Altogether, the items collected totaled almost $1,500 in gift cards for everything from Amazon to coffee and gas cards, blankets, toothbrushes, toothpaste, unscented lotions, ChapSticks, socks, hard candies, teas and coffee, to name a few.

The cheer team and fire department personnel recently delivered the collected items to members of the Advocate Good Shepherd leadership team.
