Cantigny announces winners of amateur photo contest

The three prize winners of the 2018 Cantigny in Focus amateur photo contest have been selected by visitors to the park in Wheaton.

First place went to Shelby Lynn Germain of Coal City for "At Attention," a contemplative image of her sister, U.S. National Guard Specialist Ashley Germain, on the steps of the Robert R. McCormick House. The perspective is from behind the uniformed soldier as she looks over the mansion's east lawn.

Second place went to Chuck Guedelhoefer of Naperville for "Get Away," his colorful photo of a ruby-throated hummingbird hovering over a zinnia bloom that a honeybee also is considering.

Third place went to Bill Wang of Naperville for "Tiger Tank in Snow," a striking winter image captured outside Cantigny Park's First Division Museum.

The winning shots were among 20 finalists chosen a year ago by a judging panel and displayed at the park throughout 2019. Visitors were encouraged to vote for their favorites.

The top three receive a Cantigny gift card ($100, $75 or $50). Each of the 20 finalists received a Cantigny Park annual membership.

Cantigny in Focus, an annual event for amateur photographers, began in 2006. Submitted images must be from the grounds of Cantigny Park or Cantigny Golf in Wheaton, the 500-acre former estate of Robert R. McCormick at 1S151 Winfield Road.

Entries from the 2019 edition of Cantigny in Focus will go on display at the park in February. The top three prize winners again will be determined by the public, with voting conducted throughout 2020.
