Checks reported stolen from Schaumburg postbox
A Schaumburg resident says about 30 checks she put in a postbox on Schaumburg Road were stolen.
Chris Slowinksi told NBC 5 she was paying bills for her employer, an excavation company, but when she started going over bank records, she noticed a problem.
"The name had been erased and a different name had been put on the check, and those had actually gone through and been cashed ... there was like $2,000 worth of checks that had been washed and counterfeited," she told NBC 5.
Last month, thieves attempted to cash fraudulent checks totaling more than $240,000, said Slowinski, who told the TV station she closed the account Friday.
"Until then, checks were still coming through," she said.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service told NBC 5 that officials are "aware of mail theft reports in the Schaumburg area and are actively investigating those reports."
The Daily Herald could not reach Schaumburg police or the postal service for details Wednesday evening.
