Mount Prospect Public Works Department Receives Sustainability Award

The Mount Prospect Public Works Department has been awarded the 2019 Sustainability Partnership Game Changer Award by the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA). The award was shared with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC), and recognized the Village and SWANCC for their efforts in sustainability and recycling.

The Village of Mount Prospect has been a member of SWANCC for 30 years. SWANCC provides Mount Prospect with a range of waste management services. The benefits of the partnership have allowed the Village's recycling efforts to thrive, and to offer a multitude of recycling and sustainability programs, serving as a leader in the region. It all began with a document destruction event, followed by in-house recycling and seasonal electronic recycling. Through this partnership, Mount Prospect has grown the recycling services it provides residents, allowing them to successfully divert 35% of residents' waste from landfills in 2018.

"The Mount Prospect Public Works Department strives to be a leader in new initiatives that exceed environmental standards and expectations," said Sean Dorsey, Director of Public Works. "We implement projects with an eye toward creating the maximum environmental impact, while sustaining a healthy growing economy and providing excellent community outreach. By being resourceful and involving our residents in the effort, we are making the entire community more sustainable."

The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) awards recognize innovators and leaders in its industry. Awards in five categories were given to companies or organizations that have made substantial contributions to American recycling through partnerships, public education, and innovations in recycling facilities. Winners were selected by a panel of judges who are professionals in the waste and recycling industry as well as from other technology and education organizations.
