Girls volleyball: Fremd wins tenth regional
It will be Fremd against Hersey for a third time in two weeks on Monday night at the Maine East girls volleyball sectional semifinal.
Fremd advanced by winning its 10th regional in program history on Thursday night at New Trier when the Vikings rallied to defeat the host and No. 5-seeded Trevians 21-25, 25-20, 25-20 in Winnetka.
It is the Vikings' third Class 4A regional crown in four seasons and eighth under coach Curt Pinley, who now has 501 wins in his 21 seasons directing the program.
The No. 3-seeded Vikings (33-4) will face No. 2 Hersey (28-8) at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Park Ridge.
Fremd topped Hersey in two sets for the Mid-Suburban League title, then won a three-set match over the Huskies four days later in the third-place match of the Lake Park Invite last Saturday.
Top-seeded Loyola (31-7) meets No. 4 Glenbrook South (24-9) in the first semifinal (5:30 p.m.) at Maine East.
Ridgewood regional: No. 4 Deerfield (21-13) edged No. 5 St. Viator 25-16, 12-25, 27-25 to win the championship of this Class 3A championship. The Lions finished at 13-22.
