Girls volleyball: Fremd tops Hersey again; Prospect's Cacini sets record
It didn't take long for a rematch of the Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball title match last Wednesday.
MSL champ Fremd and East champ Hersey met for third place at the Lake Park Invite on Saturday in Roselle.
Fremd earned its second win in four days over the Huskies, this time going to a third set for a 26-27, 25-19, 15-8 victory.
The Vikings went 4-1 in the tourney and now stand at 31-4, meaning coach Curt Pinley is 2 wins away from 500 for his 21-year career.
Speaking of milestones, Prospect senior Grace Cacini reached a big one on Saturday.
She became the program's all-time leader in kills when she put down 42 in five matches this weekend.
Cacini now has 648 kills which surpasses the former mark of 642 set by Sarah Hunt in 2010.
Fremd's top attacker in the invite was sophomore Rylen Reid, who put down 56 kills, followed by senior Breslin Reid (38) and sophomore Claudia Wala (14).
The Vikes' back row was led by Izzy Segoviano (46 digs). Rian Baker handed out 110 assists and Lydia Vander Ark had 13.
Wala and Allie Belmonte each posted 18 blocks.
Hersey (27-8) went 3-2 in the tourney and was led on attack by Kati Kaburov (44 kills, 9 aces, 37 digs 4 blocks), Nora Zielke (23 kills, 25 digs), Juliette van den Herik (26 kills 9 blocks), Janine Boyan (22 kills, 17 blocks) and Kate Lubbe (14 kills, 8 blocks).

Huskies junior libero Maddie Mullin, who suffered a concussion in the second set of the MSL title match, did not play.
"We are hoping to get Maddie back for the playoffs," said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. "We experimented with our lineup to prepare for the postseason. We played some tough matches which was also good preparation for the postseason."
Prospect (21-14) wound up 2-3 in the tourney, including a three-set loss to Fremd (25-23 20-25, 15-8).
In addition to Cacini, other top attackers for the Knights were Jenna Acosta (23), Annie Wiley (17) and Ellen Sherwood (9).
