Girls volleyball: Self serves up winning effort for Vernon Hills

Senior captain Jacklyn Self served 5 of her 7 aces in the final set, as Vernon Hills' girls volleyball team rallied to beat visiting Maine East 23-25, 25-13, 25-19 in a Central Suburban League North Division match on Tuesday night.

The freshman duo of Alexa Cieslinski and Ellen Amjadi both had 3 aces for the Cougars (16-14, 4-5). Senior captain Cece Schumacher also served an ace in the third set. Abby Wisniewski orchestrated the offense, setting 77 times and tallying 27 assists. Taylor Proft and Daniella Jarrell each had 8 kills, and Marta Glyvka contributed 6 kills.

The Cougars' underclassmen set the tone on defense. Amjadi led the way with 12 digs, Cieslinski added 10 digs, and sophomore Victoria Lukyan had 8 digs.

Carmel d Marian Central: The visiting Corsairs rested starting libero Milana Moisio for the East Suburban Catholic Conference match, but junior Sydney Rini came through with a 2.25 serve receive, 8 digs and 1 ace.

"We are blessed to have such talent/depth at the DS position this season," coach Dave Pazely said after his team won 25-20, 25-15 to improve to 30-5 and 5-2 in the ESCC.

Mya Mainzer (4 kills) caught fire from the service line for Carmel, going 16 of 16 with 4 aces. Annie Bart had 6 kills, 2 digs, 2 blocks and 1 ace. The Corsairs also received contributions from Shannon Brennan (11 assists), Riley Clark (2 kills), Ally DiBartolo (6 digs), Kaitlyn Donton (7 assists), Tayah Farris (4 kills, 2 blocks), Molly Halverson (3 assists), Mia Johnson (2 kills), Bella Ogurek (2 digs), Caiti Shrofe (1 dig) and Eileen Tarcha (5 kills, 7 digs).

Grayslake North d. Woodstock North: Alyssa Gerzel and Jessica Pozezinski had 14 and 11 kills, respectively, and the host Knights won 21-25, 25-16, 25-21 in nonconference action.

Grayslake North (23-11) had its starting lineup for the first time in five weeks. Middle hitter Emmy Bongiovanni, who was back in the starting lineup for the first time in five weeks due to an injury, connected with setter Lindsey Diep for 3 straight kills to open the second set. Abby Cunningham and Diep dished out 19 and 17 assists, respectively. Lexie Baker added 14 digs.

Grant d. Johnsburg: The host Bulldogs won for the second night in a row, capturing a 25-22, 25-11 decision in nonconference action.

Jazzlyn Linbo led Grant with 7 aces and 3 kills, while Anelise Johnson had 2 blocks and 3 kills. The Bulldogs also received 5 kills from Laine Evans and 15 digs from Courtney Levy.
