Girls volleyball: Gerzel's 19 kills lead Grayslake North past Warren

Alyssa Gerzel pounded a school-record 19 kills, and Grayslake North rallied to defeat visiting Warren 25-27, 25-12, 27-25 in a nonconference matchup between girls volleyball teams with winning records Tuesday night.

Jessica Pozezinski added 9 kills and 16 digs for Grayslake North (14-9), while Lexie Baker had 21 digs. Lindsey Diep and Abby Cunningham dished out 19 and 15 assists, respectively, for the Knights. Airanna Knowles had a team-high 4 block kills.

Grayslake Central d. Grant: Emma Guenther served 6 aces for the host Rams, who won 25-12, 25-14 in Northern Lake County Conference action.

Taylor Hindman (5 kills, 4 aces), Kate Bullman (5 kills) and Marissa Gulley (5 digs) also contributed big for Grayslake Central.

Rams coach Klaudia Basierak said it was the best her team has played all season.

"We played as a team, and we executed our game plan well," Basierak said.

Vernon Hills d. Highland Park: The visiting Cougars won 25-22, 21-25, 25-16 in Central Suburban League North Division action to extend their winning streak to five matches.

Vernon Hills (13-9, 2-3) was led offensively by Marta Glyvka with 10 kills. The Cougars' middle hitters continued to be consistent offensive contributors as well with Daniella Jarrell adding 5 kills and Veronica Gawin totaling 6 kills.

Setter Abby Wisniewski distributed the ball to her hitters effectively, accumulating 29 assists. Defensively, Vernon Hills was led by freshman Alexa Cieslinski with 14 digs. At the service line, Jacklyn Self and Wisniewski served 3 aces each, and freshman Elli Amjadi added 2 aces.
