New art exhibit uses several genres to create romantic pieces

An upcoming exhibit titled "Two Storytellers" will present the works of two highly respected and awarded artists, Marcia Babler and Steve Sherrell.

Babler and Sherrell portray thoughts and emotions, dreams and memories, questions and mysteries through visual expression - the storytelling aspect of visual art.

Rather than turning to literal, extremely realistic images, Babler and Sherrell have created extensive bodies of work that are symbolic, expressive or romantic. Landscapes are reconfigured, objects are fused, references and meanings are mixed.

"Seen as a whole, 'Two Storytellers' suggests a kind of magic realism, an inventive interpretation of reality based on metaphors, dreams, transformations and placement of characters in new contexts," said the exhibit's curator, Claudia Craemer.

The two artists' paintings, prints, collages, mixed media and computer pieces tell tales, illustrate myths, visualize memories and pose curious points of view through poetic relationships and environments.

Often combining symbolism and surrealism, they consciously experiment with different media and a variety of techniques to enhance their messages.

"There are always messages in my work, and it is important to get a response from the viewer," Babler said. "Art is my storytelling voice."

The "Two Storytellers" exhibit will be on display from Oct. 5 through Nov. 9 at the Tall Grass Gallery, Tall Grass Arts Association, 367 Artists Walk, Park Forest. An opening reception will be from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.

Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For information, contact the gallery at (708) 748-3377, email Marcia Babler at marciababler@aol.com or visit www.tallgrassarts.org.
